Identify what is on your roof

Guards come as mesh screens, perforated covers, foam inserts and hooded systems. Knowing which one you have tells us whether it lifts out, folds back or needs to be left alone. If the original installer left paperwork, find it; the brand name is often enough.

If you do not know, take two photos: one from the ground showing the gutter edge, and one close-up from a ladder only if you can do that safely. Otherwise describe the roofline and we will look when we arrive.

Ask about removal and putting it back

Ask whether guards are taken off, the trough cleaned and the guards refitted, or whether the surface is brushed in place. Ask how bending of the mesh is avoided and what happens if a fastener breaks. Some guard products are covered by a manufacturer's terms that may be affected by who handles them, so check yours before work begins.

It is also fair to ask whether a company has worked with your type before, us included. A short answer is fine. Hesitation is useful information, too.

Why quotes run higher

Extra handling takes time, so guarded gutters can cost more than open ones. Our quote depends on how many sections lift out, how long the run is and how stuck the debris has become. Third-party guides, such as the Angi and This Old House pages linked on the gutter cleaning page, do not treat guarded systems separately, so any local figure is set by the company quoting it.

If you are weighing whether to keep paying for maintenance on a covered system, ask for a note on what was under the screens. That tells you whether the guard is earning its place.
